One of Alabama's largest cities, Mobile is an important seaport and center of culture in the South. It is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and serves as a fusion of diverse cultural heritages; not only do its Southern roots run deep, but it also showcases evidence of its one time role as the capital of French Louisiana: Mobile is home to the nation's oldest Mardi Gras celebration (yes, even older than the one in New Orleans).
Mobile's favorite place for sophisticated arts and culture is Saenger Theatre. Not only is this historic venue home to the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, it's also a great place to enjoy ballet, musicals, theater, lectures and other types of performing arts. Concert lovers, meanwhile, can head over to Mobile venues such as the Amphitheater at the Wharf, The Listening Room and The Merry Widow.
Sports enthusiasts will want to check out the renowned Ladd Peebles Stadium, which hosts the Dollar General Bowl and the Reese's Senior Bowl each year. If you aren't in town over the winter when these storied games take place, you can always catch regular-season tickets for the South Alabama Jaguars Football team, who play for the University of South Alabama at Ladd Peebles.
Mobile is also home to the AFC Mobile soccer team of the Gulf Coast Premier League and the Mobile BayBears, who play in the Baseball Southern League at Hank Aaron Stadium.
