'The Missouri State Bears basketball team played its first game as a Division I program during the 1982-83 season. Back then, the school also had a different name. Before the 2005 season, the school was known as Southwest Missouri State. The organization is now a member of the NCAA Division I Missouri Valley Conference, but they have also played as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics where they won national championships in 1952 and 1953. Two of the organization's most notable former players are Danny Moore and William Fontleroy. Both of them are credited with taking the team as far as the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen in 1999. The organization does have a decorated history that also includes Conference Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1989 as members of the Mid-Continent Conference as well as in 1992 as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. 'When you attend a home Missouri State Bears' basketball game, you will head over to the JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo. This is an arena that has a capacity of 11,000. The women's basketball team also plays their home games at this venue.'
'Dana Ford became head coach for the Missouri State Bears basketball team on March 21, 2018. In his first year, the organization managed a .500 record of 16-16. Ford is a former player who played for Illinois State from 2002 to 2006. He began his coaching career during the 2008-09 season for Chipola. His overall coaching record is 73-81. He won the 2016 OVC Coach of the Year award.'
'The Missouri State Bears' basketball team earned a record of 16-16 for the 2018-19 season. They have not captured an NCAA national championship, but they have managed runner-up runs when they played in the NCAA Division II. As members of Division I, they made it as far as the Sweet Sixteen in 1999.'
'Among notable players who have gone through the Missouri State Bears' basketball system are Curtis Perry, Don Anielak and Winston Garland as well as Blake Ahearn and Alize Johnson. During the 2019 September alumni game, MSU Hall of Famers Danny Moore and William Fontleroy were among those who played. Moore and Fontleroy are credited with being the two players who helped get the Bears to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen in '99.'
'The atmosphere for home Missouri State Bears' basketball games can be lively. For the March Madness games that took place in March of the 2018-19 season, pep rallies were held two hours before game time to hype up the crowd before they headed over to JQH Arena.'
