Minnesota Twins FAQs:

Where do the Minnesota Twins play?

The Minnesota Twins play at Target Field, which opened in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2010, with a seating capacity of 39,504. The location presented complex problems architecturally, as it was only 8-acres when at least 12-acres is optimal for a ballpark. In solving this design challenge the builders created an impressive ballpark with one of the most interesting urban designs in the MLB. The park’s unique angles and dimensions are a result of the site’s size restrictions, and the solution was to build up and out to the sides instead, creating concourses and outfield seating that sit above the surrounding streets. Target Field lands in the top 5 on many MLB Best Stadium lists and is a bucket list ballpark for many baseball fans. The inner stadium dimensions are steep but offer impressive views of the field and downtown Minneapolis. A 46-foot-tall mechanical version of the Twins old-school logo characters, Minnie and Paul sits in center field and they “shake hands” via flashing lights after every Twins home run. There are many different seating options and gathering places that make spending extra time at Target Field enjoyable, like the rooftop deck with a bonfire, the only one in the Major Leagues. Much of the stadium’s exterior is covered with regional, Minnesota Kasota Limestone and one outer wall is lined with Tops baseball card replicas of famous Twins players over the years. The Target Plaza is a 2-acre, outdoor public gathering space with a pedestrian bridge built above the I-394 highway, connecting Target Field with downtown Minneapolis. The Plaza features bronze statues of former players, the Twins Tradition Wall, and an oversized “Golden Glove” Twins tribute. There’s a great variety of foods available, including many Minnesota favorites and alcohol-free family seating sections are available with special food prices. Target Field is one of the youngest MLB stadiums and ownership is dedicated to continually upgrading the facility to keep it top of the line. Like the new 178-foot videoboard added in 2023.

The Minnesota Twins are part of the American League Central along with the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Guardians, the Detroit Tigers, and the Kansas City Royals. The Twins divisional rivalry with the White Sox is rooted in “bad blood” from 1900, when the St. Paul Saints of the Western League were about to enter the newly formed American league and owner Charles Comiskey moved the team to Chicago, IL, instead. Minnesota did not have a baseball team of its own again until 1961.

Fun fact about the Minnesota Twins...

The Minnesota Twins have one defining feature that hasn’t changed since their first game in Minneapolis, and that’s the iconic logo of Minnie and Paul. The logo was created by St. Paul illustrator, Ray Barton at the request of then owner, Calvin Griffith. They were the only cartoon characters Barton ever drew, and they ended up being a lasting part of his legacy. Griffith requested an idea that would represent the Twins and also show Minneapolis and St. Paul’s cross-river partnership. Barton came up with 2 players nicknamed Minnie and Paul, after the cities they represented, shaking hands across the Mississippi River. He had no idea that his characters would become a patch on the Twins uniforms and remain through the years as a permanent connection to team history. He’d expected to see it on beer cups at the stadium. Yet almost 50 years later, a 46-foot-tall Minnie and Paul light-up sign was added over center field in the newly built Target Field. The lights flash to look like a handshake when the Twins hit a home run. Though Ray Barton was unable to get to Target Field before he died, he did get to see the giant Minnie and Paul sign and is said to have appreciated it.
