Midland, Texas, has been home to minor league baseball since the
Chicago Cubs
put their Double-A team there before the 1972 season. Outside of one season that saw the squad share a league championship, the team only had four other winning seasons during their 13-year run in Midland. At the end of the 1984 season, the Cubs moved their Double-A affiliation elsewhere, and the
California Angels
took over the team in Midland. The change in parent organization didn't really generate a change in results, though. Between 1985 and 1998, the Midland Angels only made the playoffs twice. The
Oakland Athletics
became the parent organization in 1999 and have been so since. The A's changed the team name to the Midland RockHounds, and the squad has put up the most successful run in Midland history. Since 1999, the RockHounds have won six Texas League championships, including four consecutive league titles between 2014-2017. ''You don't have to dive deep into the history books of Major League Baseball to find notable players who played for the RockHounds. Pitchers like A.J. Puk, Sonny Gray, Sean Doolittle and Tim Hudson were all members of RockHounds' pitching staffs. 2016 World Series champion Addison Russell came through the Oakland farm system. Sluggers Josh Donaldson, Nelson Cruz and Kurt Suzuki are also among an impressive list of RockHounds alumni.'

Security Bank Ballpark
in Midland, Texas, is the home field for the Midland RockHounds and opened in 2002. In addition to the typical baseball stadium food, there is also a solid choice of Tex-Mex concession options for those looking to take in more of the local culture. The stadium does a lot to display the nearly 50-year history of the Midland teams, including banners in the concourse for the team's Hall of Fame. The stadium also offers a host of options for families, including a basketball court, a splash pad and a playground in addition to the grassy berms beyond the outfield walls for picnic areas. The grassy areas expand the seating capacity significantly above the listed 4,709 person capacity.

The Midland RockHounds have developed a fierce rivalry with the
Frisco Roughriders.
Not only are the two teams both members of the South Division of the Texas League, but they also battle for bragging rights in the state of Texas. It's also worth noting that the Oakland Athletics are divisional rivals of the Roughriders' parent organization, the
Texas Rangers.

Scott Steinmann will return for his third season at the helm of the Midland RockHounds in 2020. Steinmann led the team to the playoffs in 2019 after winning the second-half South Division title. The team finished with a record of 73-66 before losing in the playoffs to eventual Texas League champion
Amarillo Sod Poodles.
Before joining the Oakland Athletics organization, Coach Steinmann spent eight years as an assistant coach and nine years as a manager in the
Seattle Mariners
farm system.
