Michael Schenker was born in Sarstedt, West Germany, and learned guitar at a young age. He played his first gig at 11 years old with his older brother Rudolf's band, Scorpions. Five years later, Michael officially joined Scorpions. In 1972, Scorpions released their debut album, Lonesome Crow.
Although Michael Schenker left Scorpions shortly after the release and joined UFO, he re-joined Scorpions for a short period in 1978. During his second stint, Scorpions released the widely successful album Lovedrive in 1979. It charted at No. 55 on the U.S. Billboard albums chart and No. 36 on the U.K. chart. Lovedrive also reached No. 11 on the German Albums Chart and was certified gold in Germany, the U.S. and France.
In 1979, Michael Schenker started his own band MSG, also known as Michael Schenker Group. They have a melodic hard rock and progressive music style. Their first album, The Michael Schenker Group, hit No. 8 on the U.K. Albums Chart and No. 59 in Japan. Some of the band's other albums include Assault Attack, In the Midst of Beauty, Built to Destroy and Perfect Timing.
As someone very active in songwriting throughout his career, Michael Schenker has a lot of hit songs. Some of his biggest hits are Is There Anybody There, Lovedrive, Armed and Ready and Assault Attack. The song Armed and Ready was used in the video game Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Assault Attack was featured in the video game Br�tal Legend. An album released under the Michael Schenker Group, In the Midst of Beauty, reached No. 32 in Japan, No. 78 in Germany and No. 60 in Sweden.
Michael Schenker earned the Golden God Icon Award at the 2014 Metal Hammer Golden God Awards. He also won the Rock Guitar Legend award at the 2012 Vegas Rocks! Magazine Music Awards and the Marshall 11 award in 2010.
