Miami of Ohio has fielded a Division I hockey team since the 1978-79 season. Originally, the team was coached by Steve Cady. Cady has been more than just a coach for Miami of Ohio; he later became a Senior Associate Athletic Director. Hockey has always been important at the University of Miami (Ohio), and that shows in their record. Over the years, Miami has been a frequent contender in the NCAA tournament. The Redhawks play their home games at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. This arena opened in 2006 and holds about 3,640 people during games. This is a state-of-the-art facility and includes several luxury suites. The arena is named after a former Redhawks coach. Steve Cady guided the team through their first seven seasons as a Division I team. He's worn many hats at Miami of Ohio over the years and has been an important fundraiser for the ice hockey team.
Chris Bergeron is the head coach of the Miami of Ohio Redhawks hockey team. Bergeron's hiring was announced in April of 2019. Notably, he played his college hockey for the Redhawks and was later an assistant coach there. This is a homecoming for him in many ways. As a player, he was on the Redhawks' first-ever conference championship team. Bergeron also played in the AHL, ECHL and the Canadian National Team. He understands the challenges these players face because he's been through them himself. As a coach, Bergeron headed up the program at Bowling Green for almost a decade. During that time, he demonstrated that he's got a great mind for the game. Bergeron guided the Falcons to a record of 171-154-44. The Redhawks had a challenging but promising first season under Bergeron's guidance.
The Miami of Ohio Redhawks team plays in the NCHC. The National Collegiate Hockey Conference was founded in 2011, with the first game being played in the fall of 2013. The Redhawks have been in the NCHC since the beginning. The NCHC conference features some of the best teams in NCAA Division I hockey. The record proves this: NCHC teams claimed the NCAA crown every year from 2016 to 2019. The conference tournament is known as the

The Miami of Ohio Redhawks hockey team has made it to the NCAA Division I tournament championship game once, in 2009. That year, they lost in overtime to Jack Parker's Boston University Terriers. The Redhawks have made it to the NCAA tournament 12 times in total. Since joining the NCHC conference, the team has won the Frozen Faceoff once in 2014-15.
