Mean Girls
, a musical adaptation of the hit 2004 film by Tina Fey and Mark Waters, tells the story of 16-year-old Cadey Heron. Homeschooled her entire life, Heron must learn to navigate the treacherous social hierarchies of her new high school. The original film, which starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Amy Poehler and Lizzy Caplan, was inspired by the nonfiction book
Queen Bees and Wannabees
by Rosalind Wiseman and infused with Tina Fey’s personal experiences. You can catch the caustic social satire live onstage now.
The idea to adapt
Mean Girls
for the stage originated with Tina Fey and her husband, the Emmy-winning producer and writer Jeff Richmond, around 2013. Fey wrote the book, Richmond composed the music and Nell Benjamin came up with the lyrics. Producers Lorne Michaels and Stuart Thompson brought on Tony-winning director Casey Nicholaw to helm the adaptation. After the initial tryouts,
Mean Girls
made its world premiere on Oct. 31, 2017, at the
National Theatre
in Washington DC. The original production received three nominations for Helen Hayes Awards, which recognize outstanding stage productions in the nation's capital, and won for Outstanding Visiting Production. Following the end of its run in Washington DC,
Mean Girls
moved to Broadway’s
August Wilson Theatre
on April 8, 2018. The Broadway production received 12 Tony Awards nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, though it did not garner a win. Elsewhere on the awards circuit, Tina Fey won both a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical for her work on
Mean Girls
