The Drydene 400 is an annual race held at the
Dover International Speedway
in Delaware. Held at the same venue as the
Gander RV 400
, it takes place during late September or early October, being a late event in the NASCAR Cup Series. Previously the fourth race in the playoffs, it now occupies a spot as the penultimate race of the normal Cup Series, though it’s by no means any less important or exciting. Notable drivers from Richard Petty in 1971 to Kyle Larson in 2019 have all finished in first place over the years. Jimmie Johnson is currently the record winner with five wins to date. While the race’s name has changed an impressive number of times throughout the years (22 separate names), the concrete oval racetrack has consistently been home to exciting NASCAR moments and a several fan events. ''Dover International Speedway track is an oval shape featuring four turns. In 1995, the track received a concrete surface to replace the original asphalt that covered the track when it opened in 1969. The track is one mile long and has extreme 24-degree banking with straight banking at 9 degrees, making it a monster track and one of the most competitive venues on the NASCAR schedule. Many racers and fans refer to the track as the Monster Mile.'
'The Dyrdene 400 is the second-to-last race in the Cup Series before the playoffs that makes it a particularly intense race for competitors who want to earn their chance to participate in the playoffs. The race consists of 400 laps, and fans can expect it to last between three and three and a half hours, depending on weather conditions, overtime and other variables. Beyond the race, there's also several activities for fans to participate in such as track tours, the FanZone or the kid-focused Monster Mile Youth Nation area. In addition, fans can admire the track's 46-foot-tall, muscle-bound statue outside the gates known as Miles the Monster.'
'The Dover International Speedway supports and encourages tailgating, especially during the Drydene 400 race weekend. RVs and camping are permitted, and fans gather in the parking lots and camping areas to enjoy the exciting atmosphere before and after the race.'
'In 2019, Kyle Larson, sponsored by Clover, drove a Chevrolet to take first place with a 154-lap lead. This race was a career first race for Larson. Following in second place was Martin Truex Jr., sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and Tracker ATVs and Boats and driving a Toyota. Alex Bowman, sponsored by Cincinnati Inc., and driving a Chevrolet, came in third. Richard Petty was the first racer to win in 1971 when the event comprised 500 laps. Petty has also had other wins throughout the years. Jimmie Johnson holds the record for being the driver with the most wins at the track for the 400-lap race, finishing first in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2013.'
