The lacrosse program at Maryland dates back to 1895, when the school sponsored a club team for the first time. Lacrosse became a varsity sport at Maryland in 1924, and the school has experienced more than its fair share of success since this time. The team is the winner of eight Wingate Memorial Championships and was crowned the champion of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association once. The Maryland Terrapins Lacrosse team is the only major lacrosse program in the nation to never experience a losing season. The team has been a regular participant in the NCAA Tournament that is used to crown a collegiate lacrosse champion at the end of each season since the tournament first began in 1971. The Terrapins have appeared in the Semi-Final round of the tournament 25 times. Coach Tillman has accumulated a record of 122-38 for a winning percentage of .763 over his first nine seasons as coach of the Terrapins. Since taking over in College Park in 2011, Tillman has produced 53 All-American selections and 21 NCAA Tournament victories. The Terrapins have also appeared in the Final Four round of the NCAA Tournament seven times and were crowned champions of the tournament in 2017.

What lacrosse players have been honored by the University of Maryland?

Brian Dougherty accumulated a list of notable accomplishments while playing goalie for the Maryland Terrapins Lacrosse team. Dougherty was a first-team All-American selection twice and was also honored with the Kelly Cup for being the top goalie in the nation on two occasions. Dougherty was selected as the nation's Outstanding Player in 1995 and was an All-NCAA Tournament team selection the same year. Dougherty was inducted into the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Pete Worstell was both an All-ACC and All-American selection each of the four years he played lacrosse for the Maryland Terrapins. He is also the only Terrapin lacrosse player to earn All-American honors at two positions, midfield and attack. Worstell was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2010.
