Marshall's football team traces its origins to 1895. During the early era of Marshall football, the team was known for using the Tower Play in a 1915 game. This play saw one receiver lift another to complete a pass. In November of 1970, Marshall football faced the darkest time in team history. A plane carrying the team home from East Carolina crashed and killed 75 people. The casualties included coaches, 37 players and even friends and family members. Marshall has a thriving tailgating scene. The largest tailgating area is the West Lot. Tents and canopies must be secured and must not obstruct walkways or additional parking spaces. Motorized scooters, four-wheelers and other methods of transport are not permitted.
