This play saw one receiver lift another to complete a pass. In November of 1970, Marshall football faced the darkest time in team history. A plane carrying the team home from East Carolina crashed and killed 75 people. The casualties included coaches, 37 players and even friends and family members. The team's comeback from this incident was depicted in the 2006 film,
We Are Marshall
. Overall, however, Marshall football's story is one of triumph. The 1990s and early 2000s were a particularly productive time for the Thundering Herd. The 1996 team won the Division I-AA championship, and Marshall moved up to Division I-A the following year. Marshall's defeat of rival East Carolina in double overtime at the 2001 GMAC Bowl is considered one of the all-time great bowl games. Marshall has a thriving tailgating scene. The largest tailgating area is the West Lot. Tents and canopies must be secured and must not obstruct walkways or additional parking spaces. Motorized scooters, four-wheelers and other methods of transport are not permitted. Tailgating can start up to six hours before game time, but never before 7 a.m. Marshall boosters also organize tailgates for away games meeting up at venues to get pumped up before the game.
