History

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891, and his rules remain the foundation on which the modern game is built. The game infiltrated high school athletics in the latter part of the 1890s and colleges started forming teams just after the turn of the century. The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898, but lasted only a half of a decade. The National Basketball Association was founded in 1946 and has grown into a 30-team league that is one of the most successful pro sports league in the world. The league received some serious competition from the American Basketball Association in the 1970s, and the two leagues merged in 1976 to form a more modern version of the NBA. The NBA has continued to expand with new teams and move teams to new cities to this day. The Boston Celtics hold the record for most NBA Championships with 17, and are closely followed by the Los Angeles Lakers, who have 16 in their illustrious history.
