As members of both the NCAA’s Division I and the Hockey East Association, the Black Bears are among the very best collegiate hockey teams not only in New England, where Hockey East is headquartered, but in the entire United States. Just some of the Black Bears’ impressive and accolades include five victories in the annual Hockey East Tournament and nine second-place finishes. That gives them more second-place finishes than any other team in the conference and one of the highest championship title counts as well. This is made all the more impressive when you consider that Hockey East was only founded in 1984. With so much success comes a passionate fan base eager to watch them play and a great deal of pride. Some of these include goaltenders Jeremy Swayman and Matthew Thiessen, defensemen Ryan Smith, Jack Quinlivan, Jakub Sirota and Simon Butala, and forwards Ben Poisson, Kevin Hock, Samuel Rennaker and Mitchell Fossier. The Black Bears’ great rivalry in collegiate hockey is known by both sides as the Border War. It is so named because the rivalry involves the
UNH Wildcats
, and Maine and New Hampshire share a border. The rivalry between the two teams is so longstanding, in fact, that it goes back as far as 1903. Matches between the two rivals are always popular with fans of both teams.
''
For all of their home games, the Maine Black Bears play at the
Harold Alfond Sports Arena
in Orono, Maine. The Alfond Arena is an all-purpose sporting venue that was completed in 1977 and plays host to both hockey and basketball games. For hockey games, the arena can set a total of 5,641 spectators, following a series of renovations and expansions in 1991 and 1998. When the Black Bears play away games against their rival the UNH Wildcats, those matches take place at the
Whittemore Center Arena
on campus at the University of New Hampshire. The Black Bears also frequent arenas like the
Mullins Center
at UMass Amherst and the
Tsongas Center
at UMass Lowell.
''
Given the intense rivalry between the Black Bears and the Wildcats, fans of the Black Bears may also be interested in keeping tabs on the New Hampshire Wildcats. In addition to this, Hockey East has nine other member teams, including the
UMass Lowell Riverhawks,
the
UMass Minutemen,
the
Vermont Catamounts,
the
Boston College Eagles,
and the
Merrimack Warriors.
