Promise of the Real, also known as POTR, is a country rock band that was founded in 2008 by Lukas Nelson. The band started in the Venice, California, area and spent some time performing at local venues. In 2015, Promise of the Real became the regular backup band for
Neil Young
and began to travel with him on the concert circuit. In spite of a busy schedule covering Young's tours, POTR continued to work autonomously and made its official album debut in April 2009. That first album,
Brando's Paradise Session
, was a studio recording that the band self-released and that would set the stage for the 2010 debut of the group's first full-length album,
Promise of the Real
; the band launched its 2011 United States tour to promote this self-titled album.
''
Promise of the Real shows us that relationships can enrich the music world. The son of artist Willie Nelson, Lukas was exposed to country music at a very early age. His appreciation and knowledge of music grew and led him to seek formal training in this field. It is no coincidence that his brother Micah provided the artwork for the cover of the
Promise of the Real
album. However, Micah was not working alone. He received significant assistance in the creation of the cover from the six-year-old daughter of Steve Chadie, the album's engineer.

'Promise of the Real started when Lukas Nelson and Anthony LoGerfo met at a Neil Young concert. LoGerfo would become the band's percussionist and backup vocalist when POTR was officially founded. The two musicians began to rehearse together, and later that year, Nelson left his studies at Loyola Marymount University to pursue a full-time music career. In the fall of 2008, Lukas Nelson assembled LoGerfo and two other musicians to form Promise of the Real.'

The very first work that Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real produced was an EP record entitled
Live Beginnings
, which is a collection of the band's live recordings at the famous Belly Up in Solana Beach. The group's first full-length studio album,
Brando's Paradise Session
, was followed by
Promise of the Real
in 2010. Some of the band's recent albums include
Something Real
(2016),
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real
(2017) and
Turn off the News (Build a Garden)
(2019).
''Lukas Nelson is the lead vocalist and guitarist. The other members of POTR are Anthony LoGerfo on percussion and vocals, Corey McCormick on bass and vocals, Tato Melgar on percussion and Logan Metz on keyboard, guitars, harmonica and vocals.'
'Some of the band's recent songs include Just Outside of Austin, Set Me Down on a Cloud, Save a Little Heartache, Where Does Love Go, Four Letter Word and Let Go of Your Plans.'

In 2009, the group played nine shows at the San Francisco Fillmore as an opening act for
Willie Nelson
. This engagement was followed by a brief tour of Nebraska, Utah and Colorado as a backup band to
B. B. King
. These performances increased the group's popularity and began to create a base of loyal fans. By the end of both engagements, POTR had sold out its entire stock of the
Live Beginnings
CD and thousands of copies of
Promise of the Real
.
