Lucy Woodward

Lucy Woodward is an American singer-songwriter best known for writing Christian pop star Stacy Orrico’s hit, “There’s Gotta Be More to Life.” She signed with Atlantic Records in 2003, recording her debut album, While You Can. Her top-40 hit song “Dumb Girls,” produced by Kevin Kadish, helped her secure prime press coverage and land a spot on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 2008, her second album, titled Lucy Woodward is… Hot and Bothered, combined her jazz, pop and big-band influences. In 2010, she signed with jazz label Verve Records and recorded her third full-length album, Hooked!

Woodward spent 2011 on tour as a solo artist and guest vocalist for the band Pink Martini. As part of her guest appearance for Pink Martini, she learned songs in Croatian, French, Japanese and other languages for the jazz festival circuit. That year, she also sang three spots with the San Francisco Symphony and garnered an intense desire to perform with full-string accompaniments.

Born in London to British composer Kerry Woodward and an American mother, she spent time in the Netherlands until her parents split, when she moved with her mother and brother to New York. Woodward attended a Bronx high school and studied flute, singing and piano. Accepted at age 16 into the prestigious Manhattan School of Music to study jazz, she dropped out after a year to pursue music on her own.

Collaborations

You may have heard the voice and likeness of Lucy Woodward in many places. She has sung background vocals for notable headliners like Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Carol King and Joe Cocker. She appears in the 2011 film New Year’s Eve, as Bon Jovi and Lea Michelle’s backing vocalist. In July 2016, she released the EP Til They Bang on the Door. She has toured with Rod Stewart and guest-appeared on American Idol. Woodward, Holly Palmer and Michelle Lewis perform together under the name The Goods; they have a five-song EP, released in 2013. Since 2010, Woodward has sung on and off with Brooklyn-based fusion collective Snarky Puppy.
