Lucero was formed in 1998 by lead singer and guitarist, Ben Nichols. In interviews, the band has joked that in the beginning, they didn’t know how to properly play their instruments. After a few years of developing their sound, touring and recording, Lucero began to see success with their sophomore album, Tennessee, which they released in 2002.
By the late 2000s, it was evident that the musicianship behind Lucero had evolved. 2009’s 1372 Overton Park boasted a more polished sound and featured a horn section for the first time on a Lucero album. The band continued to evolve with 2012’s Women and Work, which also featured a horn section and incorporated additional musical elements including the pedal steel guitar and a gospel chorus.
