Louisville is the home of the great NFL quarterback Johnny Unitas, the championship-winning Lady Birds dance team and the Marching Cards band. The history of Louisville Cardinals football is long and distinguished, dating to 1912. ESPN commentator Lee Corso briefly coached the team between 1969 and 1972, winning two conference titles. Howard Schnellenberger, who had just won the national championship at Miami, coached the team between 1985 and 1994. His best season was a 10–1–1 finish in 1990. After several down years, John L. Smith took over in 1998 and resurrected the team’s fortunes. The 2001 squad went 11–2 and won the conference. Head coach Bobby Petrino continued this success with a 12–1 record and
Orange Bowl
win in 2006 before departing to the
Atlanta Falcons
. In 2012, head coach Charlie Strong led the team to an 11–2 record and a victory in the
Sugar Bowl
. In 2016, quarterback Lamar Jackson became the first Cardinal in history to win the coveted Heisman Trophy with a combined 51 passing and rushing touchdowns. Get Louisville Cardinals football tickets at StubHub.
