Louisville City FC is the two-time champion of the USL Championship — the second tier of American soccer behind the MLS. The soccer club was born in 2015. When Orlando City SC moved up to MLS, the club’s co-owner decided to invest in a new Louisville franchise to fill the void in USL left over from its departure. Louisville City quickly proved to be a powerhouse in the USL. It finished second in the conference and made the conference finals in both of its first two years. The next year marked an important breakthrough. Louisville City won its first regular season conference title and captured its first championship with a 1-0 victory over the
Swope Park Rangers
. In 2018, Louisville became the first team to repeat as USL champions in back-to-back season with a victory over
Phoenix Rising FC

Louisville City FC finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with 60 points and a record of 17-8-9. In the first round of the playoffs, Louisville beat the fifth-seed Tampa Bay Rowdies by 2-1, It then pulled off a series of surprise upsets with victories over top-seed Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 2-1, and the third-seed Indy Eleven, 3-1, both in extra time, to reach the championship game. However, Louisville City could not overcome a strong performance by
Real Monarchs SLC
, the fourth seed from the Western Conference, and fell 3-1. Louisville City came out strong and scored an early goal in the sixth minute from Magnus Rasmussen, but the Monarchs scored three straight — Erik Holt in the 25th minute, Konrad Plewa in the 45th minute and Noah Powder in the 66th — to clinch the victory.
