His biggest hit came in 1965, with the song, Lightnin' Strikes, off the album of the same name. The song rose to No. 1 and was his only No. 1 hit. The single also hit No. 1 in Canada and No. 11 in the UK.

His next hit would come in 1966. The controversial, Rhapsody in Rain, rose to No. 16 on the charts. The song's controversial lyrics, which dealt with teenage lovers, was Christie's last major hit for several years. Following the single, he didn't have a song breakthrough the charts until the release of his 1969 song, I'm Gonna Make You Mine, which hit No. 10 in the US and rose to No. 2 in the UK. That would be Christie's last major hit song, but he released several singles throughout the '70s that received moderate airplay around the country.
