The London Knights are one of the most storied programs in all of Canadian junior hockey. An important incubator of young hockey talent up to the age of 20, London (then known as the Nationals) formed in 1965 as a Junior A franchise and an affiliate of the
Toronto Maple Leafs
. After the NHL stopped sponsoring junior teams in 1968, the team changed its name to the Knights. In the 21st century, the program has been responsible for one of the most dominant stretches in OHL history. Between 2003 and 2013, London captured eight division titles, six Hamilton Spectator Trophies for the best regular season record, three OHL championships and the 2005 Memorial Cup for the top team in the entire Canadian Hockey League. London added another OHL championship and Memorial Cup in 2016. During this stretch, the team also set an OHL record for an undefeated streak of 31 straight games. Dozens of London Knights alumni have appeared in the NHL and other professional leagues. Brendan Shanahan, Darryl Sittler and Dino Ciccarelli are all prominent members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Other notable players include Rick Nash, Dave Bolland, Corey Perry, Patrick Kane, John Tavares, Chris Tierney and Rob Ramage. London has retired nine jersey numbers, including all three Hall of Famers.
London finished at the top of the 2018-2019 Western Conference standings with 99 points and a record of 46-15-6-1. In the first round of the playoffs, London proceeded to sweep the Windsor Spitfires in four games. However, the team lost a tough seven-game series against the Guelph Storm in the second round. Despite surging ahead three games to none in convincing fashion, London dropped the next four games of the series as the Storm completed a stunning comeback. Guelph then went on to capture the OHL championship over the Ottawa 67’s in six games.
The London Knights and Guelph Storm have a long-standing rivalry that dates back decades even before the Storm played in Guelph. Separated by only about 60 miles, the two teams have competed in some memorable matchups, including the 2019 playoffs. Both teams are regular contenders in the OHL, winning four championships each. London’s other rivals include Owen Sound and Windsor.

and other teams, Hunter bought the program in 2000 and led it through an unprecedented period of success. In recognition for his talent, Hunter won the 2004 Coach of the Year in all of the Canadian Hockey League.
