Its full name is Light Up the Blues - An Evening of Music to Benefit Autism Speaks. As its name suggests, the event is a benefit concert to support Autism Speaks, which is a non-profit organization committed to supporting the care and concerns of people with autism. Proceeds from the Light Up The Blues Live festivals are applied toward Autism Speaks' efforts into advancing research, getting more children screened for autism and improving interventions and making it easier for adults with autism to transition from childhood. Since the first Light Up the Blues Live event in 2013 and up through 2017 alone, the annual festival had raised over $1.8 million.
April of every year is World Autism Month. Autism Speaks kicks off its activities in honor of this tradition on April 2 with the launch of Light It Up Blue. This is an annual worldwide autism awareness, acceptance and understanding campaign. In addition to highlighting the struggles and challenges for people with autism, it also highlights their extraordinary gifts and talents. The Light Up the Blues Live Festival typically takes place toward the end of the month, closing out World Autism Month.

The inaugural Light Up the Blues event in 2013 was iconic for many reasons, one of them being that it was recorded for posterity in a documentary film. With Jack Black as the M.C., fans saw Rickie Lee Jones, John Mayer, Brandi Carlile, Lucinda Williams, Don Felder and Crosby, Stills and Nash take the stage. Also at the performance and on the video were one-of-a-kind performances by newcomers Xolie Morra and The Strange Kind, rapper Watsky, Rio Soulschocka Wyles, Neal Katz and Adam Mandela Walden. It's clear from each one's performance in the film that every artist was aware of the meaning and power of being there and playing at this important premiere event. In addition, at the 2018 Light Up the Blues event, the Heartbreakers played its first concert since the death of frontman Tom Petty. Anytime Stephen Stills brings his young son Oliver, who has autism himself, on stage to perform with him and others, like Neil Young, it is always an iconic moment of any event.
The 5th Annual Light Up the Blues benefit concert took place on Saturday, April 21, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., the home of each year's Oscar Awards ceremony. The event featured performances by Steve Ferrone, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Oliver Stills, Chris Stills, Sheryl Crow, Judy Collins, Burt Bacharach, Stephen Stills and Neil Young. In addition, three artists with autism performed at the event. Light Up the Blues is often a great place to go stargazing as well.
