The Liberty Flames basketball team is a program on the rise. After an Atlantic Sun Conference title and a first round NCAA Tournament win in 2019, the Flames will likely be a trendy sleeper pick if they reach the Big Dance again this year. The Flames currently play home games in the Vines Center which is known as The Furnace, but the team will be replacing its longtime home in 2020 with a smaller and more intimate arena for some basketball games. With the program heading in the right direction, Liberty is upping its basketball profile this season with games against power conference teams such as
Rice
, LSU and
Georgetown
that will prepare the Flames for conference basketball play. The current version of the Flames returns nearly all of its talent from the previous year, and the program has learned how to win. You can be a part of all of this when you buy your Liberty Flames basketball tickets at StubHub today.
''Ritchie McKay is in his fifth season at the helm of the Flames. He has taken a program that was 8-24 the year before his arrival and turned it around to the point where it is the conversation of the top mid-major programs in the country. This is actually McKay's second stint at the school as he was previously head coach of the program until 2009.'
'Coach McKay was a protege of Tony Bennett's when he was an assistant coach at the University of Virginia. There, he picked up an understanding of the tough defense that UVA plays, and he brought it to Liberty. The Flames team has improved defensively practically each year under McKay and has allowed only 61.4 points per game in the 2018-19 season. In order to beat Liberty, teams will have to take the Flames out of its normal style of play. That is a tall task.'
'The Liberty Flame who had the most prolific career in the pros is Seth Curry. He is the brother of Stephen Curry and played several seasons at Liberty. Peter Aluma briefly played in the NBA and was the first in a long line of dominant big men to man the middle for the Flames. He is the career-leading shot blocker in the Big South Conference. Karl Hess is the leading scorer in program history back from the days before the Flames played Division I basketball.'
'For nearly their entire Division I basketball existence, the Flames played in the Big South Conference. For the 2018-19 season, the Flames switched to the Atlantic Sun Conference and immediately vaulted to the top of the league. The Flames appear poised to dominate the Atlantic Sun for some time to come.'
'The Flames has had four NCAA Tournament berths. Notably, the team improbably made the Big Dance in 2013 with a 15-20 record, becoming one of the few teams with a winning percentage under .500 to qualify for March Madness. In 2019, the Flames won its first-ever game in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, the team took out favored Mississippi State to advance. In the second round, it drew in-state rival Virginia Tech and fell 67-58. However, the Flames are favored to win its conference in 2019-20 and to get back to the NCAA Tournament.'
