Laurie Berkner and her namesake band deserve much credit as pioneers in the ever-blossoming genre known as kindie rock, children's music that isn't dumbed down for its audience. Supported by pianist Susie Lampert, bassist Brady Rymer and drummer Bob Golden, Berkner entertains audiences across the U.S. with such favorites as We Are the Dinosaurs and Walk Along the River.

Laurie Berkner was raised in Princeton, N.J., where she was heavily involved in band, musical theater and choir. She was part of the all-female cover band Lois Lane before moving over to a new project called Red Onion. Struggling with songwriting, she was pleasantly surprised by how much more fluid the process was when she made children her audience. Writing for kids helped her discover fresh new layers of creativity that she never knew she had.
She launched her recording career in 1997 with the release of Whaddaya Think of That?, which she recorded with help from the Laurie Berkner band. She pressed just 500 copies, and personally filled orders from her tiny one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, eventually selling all 500. Before releasing her second album, Buzz Buzz, in 1998, Berkner formed Two Tomatoes Records. By the time Victor Vito emerged in 1999, Berkner was attracting national attention and even hired a publicist. An appearance on the Today Show boosted her sales to the point that she had to move Two Tomatoes Records out of her small apartment and into a real office in 2002.
