At a tender age, Belgian-born Lara Fabian learned to play the piano and took up dancing and singing. At the age of eight, she received formal music training at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, paving the way for her to start penning and performing her own material. She drew inspiration from classic and modern titans like Queen and Barbra Streisand.

In the 80s, Fabian competed in several European contests, and she took home many prizes. Released in 1986, L'Aziza est en pleurs/Il y avait served as her debut track. Two years later, Fabian was asked by Luxembourg's RTL TV to participate in the 33rd Eurovision Song Contest. She earned fourth place with the song, Croire (Trust). The song ended up becoming a success in Europe and sold almost 500,000 copies.

After relocating to Montreal, Canada, with Rick Allison, a producer, Fabianlaunched herown publishing company and record label, coined as Productions Clandestines. She released her eponymous album a year later in Canada. The album claimed gold certification in 1993 and the following year, the album went platinum. Infectious tracks like Les murs, Qui pense a l'amour and Le jour ou tu partira raised Fabian's profile and garneredheavy radio airplay. At the ADISQ awards, she claimed multiple award nods. And around that same time she was ranked as the most promising singer in Quebec.

Sticking to a steady tour schedule nudged Fabian's Carpe Diem album (1994) to become a tremendous hit. Just three weeks after the album hit the shelves, Carpe Diem claimed gold certification. It also yielded the hit tracks: Leila, Tu t'en vas and Si tu m'aimes. In 1995, it earned triple platinum status. Pure dropped next, which generated La Difference. Fabian issued a live album next that cemented her global status. She inked a deal with Sony Music, which put out her eponymous English-language effort in 2000. The album rocketed to No. 1 on the U.S. Heatseeker chart and shot up the French charts. Her fifth album, Nue, went back to French language. A Wonderful Life followed in 2004, serving as her sophomore English-language effort. Fabian continued to release several more albums throughout the 2000s, and her latest album is Le Secret, which dropped in 2013.
