'About La Dispute'

'

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, La Dispute is a post-hardcore group formed in 2004. Currently, the lineup consists of Jordan Dreyer on vocals, Brad Vander Lugt on drums, Chad Morgan-Sterenberg on guitar, and Adam Vass on bass. The band has released their EP debut, Vancouver (2006, Friction Records) and Here, Hear and Untitled 7 (2008, Forest Life). Their album debut Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair appeared alongside Here, Hear II in November of 2008 on No Sleep Records. 2009's Here, Hear III, 2010's The Worth of the World, and 2011's Never Come Undone were stopgap EPs before the arrival of their sophomore full-length, 2011's Wildlife. Their third studio full-length was 2014's Rooms of the House.

Formed in late 2004 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, La Dispute originally consisted of cousins Brad Vander Lugt and Jordan Dreyer, Adam Kool, Derek Sterenberg, and Kevin Whittemore. During this time, the group played mainly house shows or at the volunteer-run DIY community center and arts venue Division Avenue Arts Collective in the city's downtown core. In 2006, Chad Sterenberg took over for his older brother Derek the day after their EP debut, Vancouver, was released. This record would be the only La Dispute release through Friction Records. Adam Vass, an Indiana-based friend of the group, joined later in 2007. It was not until they lost Adam Kool and Derek Sterenberg that the band started to take themselves seriously.

In early 2008, La Dispute joined the roster of Southern California-based No Sleep Records. To maintain their fan base between Vancouver and their sophomore full-length, La Dispute issued Untitled 7, an exclusive vinyl release, which consisted of two songs originally intended for their debut album. Shortly after, the Here, Hear EP arrived, with its sequels due to follow. In November of 2008, the band issued their official debut on No Sleep Records, Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair. The album's lyrics were inspired by an Asian folk tale about the struggles of a princess and a prince who were separated after their marriage by a river they were not allowed to cross. The album was well-received by the critics, and was released concurrently with their second extended player Here, Hear experiment. In December of 2009, the band issued the third installment, Here, Hear III.

In May and April of 2010, the band supported Alexisonfire alongside Therefore I Am and Trash Talk in a United States tour. La Dispute collaborated with Touché Amoré for a 7 EP released in September of 2010 and named Searching for a Pulse/The Worth of the World. Members of both bands would co-write the material, which was performed with vocal crossovers from each lead vocalist. As early as November of 2010, La Dispute began working on their second studio album. The material had to be recorded sporadically across a number of locations to fit with their heavy tour schedule. The set, entitled Wildlife, would arrive in October of 2011.

In December of 2013, along with a brand new website, the band announced that their third full-length album, entitled Rooms of the House, would arrive in March of 2014. The album was co-produced with Will Yip.

La Dispute's sophomore full-length Wildlife would be their first to chart, cracking the rock chart's Top 40. This Grand Rapids-based post-hardcore outfit had developed significantly since the release of their 2008 major-label debut, Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair, a maturation clearly evident in this follow-up. While Jordan Dreyer's vocal work and the instrumental performances earlier competed for listeners' attention, on Wildlife the musicians are working more cohesively so that the singing and instrumentals complement each other. Guitarists Chad Sterenberg and Kevin Whittemore place less emphasis on eccentric time signatures, instead opting for emotionally vibrant chord progressions, while drummer Brad Vander Lugt and bassist Adam Vass lay down a suspenseful rhythm section. This helps to support Dreyer's alternately speaking-singing vocal style as he delivers seasoned lyrics inspired by despair and loss on tracks about a child's death (I See Everything), gang warfare (King Park, and mental health issues (Edward Benz, 27 Times). The set verges on concept album territory, delivering four monologues presented as a writer's unpublished short stories (A Broken Jar, A Poem, A Letter, A Departure). Wildlife strikes a perfect balance between the power and energy fans have come to expect and a maturity exceeding the age of La Dispute's members.

2014's Rooms of the House would make it to number 45 on the Billboard 200 and to number 11 on the Top Rock Albums chart. It is the third full-length release from the post-hardcore band La Dispute. The group's style is distinctive in part due to vocalist/lyricist Dreyer's poetic, pictorial lyrics, which fade in and out from pained emo screaming to vivid spoken word imagery. The set was co-produced by Will Yip, a Philadelphia-based multi-genre producer, and it represents one of La Dispute's first releases on their own label, Better Living, after a frequent turnover of labels on earlier albums. Throughout Rooms of the House, Dreyer paints complex lyrical images of both nightmarish stream-of-consciousness landscapes and portraits of everyday banalities as the band explodes behind these odd, frequently painful stories.

'Trivia'

'Before forming La Dispute, lyricist and vocalist Jordan Dreyer was never a singer or a songwriter, having previously written only short fiction and poetry.'
