Based on the classic 1933 film,
King Kong
is a musical extravaganza that revolves around the adventures of a down-and-out film director named Carl Denham, first mate Jack Driscoll and a struggling actress named Ann Darrow. Searching for his next great spectacle, Denham hatches a plan to film his movie on an exotic and remote island known as Skull Island, where an ancient and untamed creature resides. You can catch the spectacle for yourself on Broadway.

King Kong
began life as an Australian production, taking around five years to go from an idea to the stage. Marius de Vries, who has worked on
Moulin Rouge!
,
Romeo and Juliet
and later
La La Land
, composed the music for the play, while playwright Craig Lucas wrote the book and lyrics. The centerpiece of the musical, however, is a 20-foot-tall animatronic gorilla created by Creature Technology Company. The one-ton beast features 985 feet of electrical cable and 1,500 connections, requiring a large team to control its lifelike movements.
King Kong
made its worldwide debut at the
Regent Theatre
in Melbourne, Australia, June 15, 2013, and closed after nine months. To adapt the musical for Broadway, Jack Thorne, who won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Play with
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
, made major modifications to the book and lyrics. The resulting musical made its New York premiere at the
Broadway Theatre
Nov. 8, 2018, and then closed Aug. 18 of the following year. The original Broadway production received three Tony Award nominations for Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical. Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company won a Special Tony Award for their work on the animatronic character.

The musical numbers of the first act include Prologue, Dance My Way to the Light, Queen of New York, Building the Boat/Setting Sail, Cabin Soliloquy, Pressure Up, The Mutiny, Skull Island, The Ascent, The World, The Cobra Fight, Full Moon Lullaby/Shine, The Descent and Kong’s Capture. King Kong
is one of Broadway’s largest spectacles. Given the complexity of the technology involved in Kong's elaborate movements (for example, the fight with the cobra or the climbing of the Empire State Building), there are few musicals like it on the stage. Attendees are encouraged to clap, cheer and laugh along with the story. The running time for
King Kong
is approximately two hours and 30 minutes with a single intermission between the first and second acts.
