''The Kentucky Wildcats played their first basketball game in 1903, but it was more than a decade later before the team started to show some real promise under the coaching of George Buchheit. When Adolph Rupp started his 42-year stint as head coach of the Wildcats in 1930, the team came into its own. In 1946, Kentucky beat Rhode Island to win its first National Invitational Championship. The Wildcats team won its first NCAA Championship in 1948 and its second the following year. The Wildcats won four NCAA Championships under Coach Rupp and another title under his successor, John B. Hall, in 1984. Rick Patino became a coach in 1989 and led the team to the National Championship in 1996. Coach Tubby Smith was at the helm when the Wildcats clinched the Championship in 1998 and its most recent National win in 2012. The Kentucky Wildcats program has played in the Final Four 17 times. Twelve Kentucky Wildcats have represented the United States at the Olympic Games, and several have been selected to play in the NBA. 'One of the players to look out for on the 2020 Kentucky Wildcats' basketball team is Isaiah Jackson. The 6-foot, 9-inch forward was the No. 22 recruit in the ESPN 100 for 2020. Ashton Hagans, Immanuel Quickley, Nick Richards and Tyrese Maxey are also standouts on the team.'
'A unique Kentucky Wildcat tradition is an annual tent city campout for entry to an event at Rupp Arena known as Big Blue Madness. The early October gathering is a big pep rally that includes the introduction of the men’s and women’s basketball teams for the year, skills competitions and speeches from the coaches. Kentucky fans also look forward to the K Flag and cheerleaders circling the arena to deafening crowd roars in the seven-minute break near the end of every game.'
'Opened in 1976, Rupp Arena can seat more than 20,000 Wildcat fans. The arena was named for the legendary Wildcat coach, Adolph Rupp.'
'
Many consider Dan Issel, a Wildcat center who played from 1965-1970, to be one of the team's greatest. Issel is the highest-scoring player in UK history and was No. 1 in career rebounding. Ironically, Issel never played on a championship UK team. He went on to play in the NBA and later to coach for the
Detroit Pistons
. Dan Issel is in the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Kentucky Wildcats' team has many basketball rivals from
UCLA
, whose 11 National Championships make them a target, to the
North Carolina Tar Heels
, who boast 18 Final Four appearances. But two rivals have stood the test of time. Fellow Kentuckians the
Louisville Cardinals
team is always a neighborly thorn in the Wildcats side, and the two teams have met 52 times. As of the beginning of the 2019 season, Kentucky leads in all-time matchups 36-16. The
Tennessee Vols
are the only SEC team to have beaten the Wildcats five times in a row.
''In 2018-2019, the Kentucky Wildcats went 15-3 in Conference play, 30-7 overall and 16-2 at home. The team made it to the Elite Eight, losing to the No. 5 seed Auburn.'
