Fromed in 1991 in Stockholm, Katatonia was originated by Jonas Renske and Anders Nystrom. After more than a year of rehearsals and composing, the first real results of their efforts came to the forefront in mid-1992 with the release of the demo, Jhva Elohim Meth. The demo sold out instantly, drawing the attention of Dutch label Vic Records, who went on to reissue the demo as a mini CD called Jhva Elohim Meth - The Revival. The CD sold out quickly as well, and their reputation blazed a trail through the underground. It was then the pair realized they would need a more complete lineup to move the band forward. Bassist Guillaume Le Huche (aka Israphel Wing) joined the duo, enabling them to take the stage live for the first time in their career. In September 1994, the band produced For Funerals to Come. Le Huche left the band shortly after, and the band went on hiatus for a whole year due to their struggle to find a permanent lineup. But just when it seemed the doom metal band had met its own doom, Renske decided to revive Katatonia and had Fredrik Norrman join the ranks. Since then, the band has undergone various lineup changes but their melancholy sound continues to eclipse the music scene.
Katatonia developed a strong presence in underground music with releases like Sounds of Decay, Night Is the New Day and The Great Cold Distance. Billed as true innovators, they are recognized for their distinctive blend of discordant, droning guitar and bold, intermittent bass. Their spine-chilling, recurring melancholy style is usually depicted as apocalyptic, leaving listeners wondering how Katatonia's bleak soundscapes can be so captivating.
