When most Americans envision Kansas, they think of its rich farmlands and small towns defined by Midwestern charm. Yet the Sunflower State's larger cities, among them Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City, offer live entertainment and events to rival many of its coastal counterparts. Venues across Kansas boast comprehensive calendars packed with comedy shows, musical performers across all genres, theater and dance performances, and sporting events. Wichita boasts the renowned Music Theatre Wichita, Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Kansas City visitors and locals can check out performances. The Topeka Performing Arts Center is that city's hub for concerts, plays and family events.

The MLS's Sporting Kansas City is the state's only major league sports franchise, although a number of minor league teams are present too. The University of Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats add college sports to the mix. Auto racing fans should check out the schedule of the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.

The largest music festival in Kansas is the three-day Country Stampede Music Festival at Tuttle Creek Lake State Park. Another Kansas festival of note is the Walnut Valley Festival celebrating bluegrass and other acoustic styles over five days in Winfield.
