Some say that the Kansas State Wildcats football team played its first game on Thanksgiving Day in 1893. Others say that the first game took place Nov. 3, 1894. Officially, the first recorded game the Wildcats played was Nov. 28, 1896. A lot of uncertainty revolves around official games and scores in the early days because the modern rules of football had not been rolled out yet, so games were played with different standards. The team has earned six conference titles, and the most recent title was earned in 2012. The Wildcats play its home games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kans., and the team is a member of the Big 12 Conference. Home games take place at the Bill Snyder Family Stadium at Wagner Field in Manhattan, Kansas. Opened Sept. 21, 1968, the stadium has a capacity of 50,000, and it has received several renovations and upgrades since it was first built. The work on the venue has improved the game and fan experience. The work has also added aesthetic touches. Decorative limestone battlements were added that now resemble the old World War I Memorial Stadium.
Chris Klieman was named the head coach of the Kansas State Wildcats football program Dec. 10, 2018. Without a record with the Wildcats, there is anticipation to see the type of season his team will have in 2019. His contract with Kansas State is for six years. Klieman has been coaching football since 1991, and he has put together a decorated career. His overall record at the college level is 72–13, and his tournament record is 18–1. He was also awarded the MVFC Coach of the Year in 2017.
With such a long existence, it is not surprising that several notable former players have gone through the organization. Charlie Bachman, Mark Simoneau, Bill Snyder, Gary Spani and Lynn “ ”Pappy“ ” Waldorf are all former players who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Former players have earned a myriad of individual awards, including Offensive Player of the Year, Offensive Lineman of the Year and Big 12 Athlete of the Year. Kansas State has 30 players who were named All-Americans, including Jordy Nelson.
