Justin Furstenfeld is perhaps best known as the frontman for the rock band Blue October, but since his first solo album and tour in 2014, he has made his own individual mark on the music scene. Whether unveiling new compositions or performing songs he's released with his previous bands, Furstenfeld showcases a signature post-grunge, alternative rock sound diversely influenced by country, hip-hop and soul.

Justin Furstenfeld hails from Houston, Texas and counts among his musical influences Roy Orbison, The Smiths, Michael Stipe, U2 and Eddie Vedder. He released a pair of albums with his first band, Last Wish, before founding Blue October in 1996. The band went on to release more than a dozen records between 1998 and 2016, among them eight studio albums and three live albums. They notably opened for the Rolling Stones at a Boise, Idaho concert in 2006.

Their 2006 album Foiled went platinum; 2009's Approaching Normal peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 chart; and 2010's Any Man in America reached No. 8 on the Billboard Album Sales chart. Blue October's hits include the platinum-selling singles Hate Me, Dirt Room and Into the Ocean. The band's most recent release, 2016's Home, debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Alternative Albums chart, likewise topping the Billboard Rock Albums chart and Billboard Alternative Albums chart.

Justin Furstenfeld's solo career

In 2014, Justin Furstenfeld released his first solo album, Songs from an Open Book. The live album features Furstenfeld on guitar and vocals performing stripped-down versions of songs played with both his previous bands. The album reached No. 45 on the Billboard 200 chart, No. 1 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart and No. 2 on the iTunes Rock Albums chart.

Furstenfeld is also a talented painter whose creations have been used as covers for two Blue October albums. In 2009 he published a book, Crazy Making - The Words and Lyrics of Justin Furstenfeld, detailing the inspirations behind his songs.
