Hailing from Minot, North Dakota, Craig said he was raised on a musical diet of Christian rock and soft rock. In an interview with Eat Yo Beats, he explained, My mom made me listen to tons of shit when I was a kid, everything from Michael Bolton to some weird ass Christian rock bands. Craig struggled with school as a kid and ultimately got his G.E.D. and then set his sights on music. In an interview with KLSU radio, Craig revealed that he was looking for an outlet. He said, I just wanted an escape from a lot of things when I was a child I guess. I just wanted to get away from a lot of the problems that I was dealing with at home and stuff.
In 2000, Craig founded westerHALTS. With Tacoma, Washington as its home base, the garage band's main purpose for Craig was ... just for something to pay for weed, something I played over the weekends. He then took the helm of Ghost Runner on Third in 2002. The band's first EP, Speak Your Dreams, dropped in 2005 and garnered rave reviews. By 2007, Craig joined the fold of Dance Gavin Dance. During his time with them, they released Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean (EP) and Downtown Battle Mountain (full-length album). Both made waves on the music scene. After parting ways with Dance Gavin Dance, Craig took up with Emarosa as the band's lead singer. As a career musician, Craig was also a member of Chiodos and Cinematic Sunrise as well as Isles & Glaciers. The Hearts of Lonely People was Isles & Glaciers' debut EP. Eventually, Craig went out on his own. He released A Dream Is a Question You Don't Know How to Answer in 2009. A year later, Live at Bamboozle came out. His solo career also yielded the 2012 demo which featured Rhythm in My Soul, You're Just Another Whore, I Belong Out There and When It Rains It Pours. In 2013, he independently released Find What You Love and Let It Kill You. Most recently, Craig issued The Le Cube Sessions in 2015.
When he's not busy with his solo career, Craig also dedicates his time to Slaves. The band has spawned Through Art We Are All Equals (2014) and Routine Breathing (2015).
''Jonny Craig issued his first solo effort, A Dream Is a Question You Don't Know How to Answer in 2009. He additionally raised his solo profile by posting three tunes on his MySpace page. The songs were Children of Divorce, 7 AM, 2 Bottles And The Wrong Road and Istillfeelher III.'
'Did you know that Jonny Craig's voice is often likened to songstress Christina Aguilera? Yep, it's true. And it's not surprising considering Craig credits his influences as being Boyz II Men and Aretha Franklin.'
