Joe Hisaishi's Transformative Studio Ghibli Film Scores

While Hisaishi's first major anime score was in 1974, he did not begin working with Hayao Miyazaki until 1983. Joe was recommended by Tokuma Shoten, a publishing company in Tokyo, to create an album for Hayao's second film,

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

. After becoming such great friends, the pair went on to continue working together on future projects. Hisaishi founded a recording studio, which led to working with John Williams and Steven Spielberg.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

was Joe's big break, as he was then invited to compose a plethora of other film scores. The first feature to have a Studio Ghibli banner was

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

from 1986. Hisaishi created the gentle outro that eventually became a trademark of all Studio Ghibli films. He worked on the studio's films that aired in the 1990s, such as

Princess Mononoke

and

Porco Rosso

. His work with Studio Ghibli helped boost his reputation as a successful anime musical contributor. The composer has helped create music for a plethora of situations, such as the 1998 Winter Paralympics soundtrack and a computer-animated educational film. The title track, Summer from the film

Kikujiro

went on to be his most popular composition to date. In 2001, he created music for the Studio Ghibli film

Spirited Away

. The Hayao Miyazaki film

Howl's Moving Castle

was released in 2004 and featured compositions by Hisaishi. He has also created music for other popular Studio films, such as

My Neighbor Totoro

,

Kiki's Delivery Service

,

Ponyo

and
