'About Jo Dee Messina'

'

Jo Dee's career began at a young age, singing in local clubs while her brother and sister played drums and guitar. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee at age 19 in order to chase her dream of becoming a country music star like her idols Patsy Cline and Reba McEntire. She managed to supplement her income at first with a variety of temp jobs, including computer programming. During this period, she continued to enter various local talent shows, where she hoped her abilities and talent would be exposed and opportunity would knock.

Her prayers were answered when she won a regular position on the radio show Live at Libby's. This was where she managed to catch the attention of producer Byron Gallimore (producer of artists such as Faith Hill, Sugarland, and Lee Ann Womack). Gallimore, at the time, was working with the young singer and actor Tim McGraw. Having struck up a relationship with McGraw, Jo Dee happened to meet James Stroud, founder of Curb Records, backstage at one of his shows.

With a stroke of luck (by suggesting that they needed to sign a redhead!), Messina was signed to Curb and released her self-titled debut album in 1996. It was an immediate success, with the first two singles - Heads Carolina, Tails California and You're Not In Kansas Anymore - both charting in the Top 10.

Since then, Jo Dee has released four full-length LPs, with each signalling an evolution and progression of her abilities as a songwriter and musician, while still staying true to her original vision.

Thanks to her newfound success following the release of her self-titled debut album, Jo Dee went on to perform 215 shows in 1996, which - along with her album sales topping 500,000 - made her one of the hottest female singer-songwriters of the 90s. Facing personal and financial distress after this, she then managed to regain control of her life and career. This was thanks to the two lead singles (Bye, Bye and I'm Alright) from her 1998 album, titled I'm Alright, with both charting at number one. This was followed by another number chart-topper, Stand Beside Me. In 1999, she released two more singles: Lesson in Leavin and Because You Love Me; both peaked in the US Country Chart at positions 2 and 8, respectively.

Jo Dee's 2000 album, simply titled Burn, featured collaborations with a variety of prominent country music figures, including Tom Shapiro, Stephanie Bentley, Tina Arena, and more. The first four singles from the album (That's The Way, Burn, Downtime, and Bring On The Rain featuring Tim McGraw) all charted in the US Country Top 10 again. Both That's The Way and Bring On The Rain claimed the number one spot soon after their release.

She saw success again with the release of her follow-up album, Delicious Surprise, which was released in 2005. The single My Give A Damn's Busted once again saw her charting at the number one spot, while the three later singles (Delicious Surprise (I Believe It), Not Going Down, and It's Too Late to Worry) all made appearances in the Top 40.

Jo Dee Messina's 2014 album, Me, was crowdfunded by fans using Kickstarter, helping her to raise over $100,000. The My Time. Our Music campaign was the fifteenth most-popular music campaign in Kickstarter.com history, and the fans accordingly picked the title for the LP. Jo Dee harnessed the power of social networking to allow contributing fans to vote for the set list, the artwork, and the first single. It features 12 outstanding new songs, two of which (Peace Sign and A Woman's Rant) both went to radio. Following the positive reception of this album, she toured in its support in October 2014.

Besides being one of the most successful country singer-songwriters of her generation, Jo Dee is also a published author, having co-authored the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: Thanks to My Mom with Amy Newmark. The book is a collection of 101 true stories submitted by various people which detail the unique insanity that comes from being a loving mother.
