About Jello Biafra

Musician Jello Biafra got his start in music when he was in the San Francisco-based punk band, the Dead Kennedys. One day in 1978, he happened to come across an advertisement that was recruiting members for a punk band. Biafra responded to the ad and the Dead Kennedys were formed. The Dead Kennedys later became one of the most popular and influential punk bands around, and they were one of the first punk bands in the United States to write politically charged lyrics. Biafra has always been outspoken about politics, and his views shaped the music of the band. By 1979, the Dead Kennedys had their first hit with the satirical song, California Uber Alles. In fact, the song was so popular that it was covered by many other musicians, including The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and John Linnell of They Might Be Giants. In 1980, the Dead Kennedys followed up their first single with yet another smash hit, Holiday in Cambodia, which was from their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. This song is considered to be one of the most successful in the hardcore punk genre, and it is a longtime favorite of fans.

After his time with the Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra took over the independent record label called Alternative Tentacles, which had been used to self-produce the Dead Kennedys' first single. He later began musical collaborations with other artists, in addition to focusing his time on spoken word poetry. One such collaboration is Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine. The band released their debut album, The Audacity of Hype in October of 2009, which included tracks like New Feudalism, Electronic Plantation, Three Strikes, and Panic Land. The album contained the same politically subversive lyrics that he became famous for while he was in the Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine followed up with their next album, White People and the Damage Done. They have since embarked on various tours, and continue to bring their political punk rock tunes to venues all over.
