The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is a big band and jazz orchestra associated with Jazz at Lincoln Center, a New York performing arts organization formed in 1987. Jazz at Lincoln Center puts on jazz performances from visiting musicians and even streams many of these concerts live on its official YouTube channel. Its jazz orchestra, founded on the following year in 1988, remains the central attraction of the whole event, offering audiences an evening of transcendent jazz music. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is currently led by

Wynton Marsalis.

When inviting visiting musicians to play with the orchestra or even when the orchestra simply plays on its own, complex improvisational passages by various sections and impressive coordination by orchestra members are essential components of its excellent music.

Despite being founded in 1987, Jazz at Lincoln Center didn't officially open until 2004, when construction on the music hall in which it would put on orchestral performances was completed. The venue is called Rose Hall and consists of three sub-venues:

Rose Theater,

the main performance hall; the

Appel Room,

an acoustically-designed space that hosts theater, dance and opera performances as well as jazz; and Dizzy's Club, another room named after legendary jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. The orchestra was originally formed out of a concert series called Classical Jazz. When Wynton Marsalis, a trumpet virtuoso and jazz composer in his own right, became artistic director at Lincoln Center in 1991, he took over the orchestra and infused it with the spirit and musical influence of Duke Ellington. This was showcased on the orchestra's first studio album, 1992's

Portraits by Ellington.

The orchestra currently consists of 13 members. It has collaborated with many artists over the years and released a total of 23 albums so far, the latest of which is 2018's

Una Noche con Rubén Blades

.
