About Jay Black

Jay Black rose to prominence during the 60s when he led the band Jay and the Americans. Before Jay Black joined them, the band already had a hit with She Cried, which rose to the number 5 position on the charts, and was later covered by a number of other musical artists. After their next singles failed to pick up much speed, their lead singer Jay Traynor left the group. In need of a new singer, Jay Black soon came on board, and he led Jay and the Americans through a new period of fame and success.

With Jay Black at the helm, Jay and the Americans returned to the airwaves with the song Only In America, which made it to the number 25 position on the chart. A number of other hits followed, including 1964's Come A Little Bit Closer, which quickly climbed to the number 3 spot, and 1965's Cara Mia, which hit number 4. Jay and the Americans' popularity soared during this time, and they performed frequently on television shows, like Hullabaloo, Johnny Carson, Shindig, Red Skelton, and more. They later served as the opening band for The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and many other popular British groups.

Another moment of success for the band came when they released their album, Sands of Time, which hit the number 51 position on the Billboard 200 chart, and produced the successful hit, This Magic Moment, which went to the number 6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also included popular songs like Hushabye and When You Dance. Following their success of Sands of Time, Jay and the Americans released Wax Museum in 1970, which included the song, Walkin' In The Rain, originally recorded by The Ronettes. The song was a hit, and went on to reach the number 19 spot on the chart. Throughout the years that followed, the members of Jay and the Americans left to pursue solo careers, but Jay Black continues to keep the spirit of their music alive by regularly touring and playing to sold-out venues.

Jay Black's Breakthrough Album

Jay Black got his big break when he landed the lead singer position of the group Jay and the Americans. Previously led by singer Jay Traynor, the band saw great success with Jay Black on board.
