Itzhak Perlman was born in 1945 in Israel. He makes frequent visits to performance halls and venues as a violist and guest conductor for such luminaries as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra as well as Boston Symphony, National Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. The bulk of performances take place during the orchestra season from fall to spring. Despite contracting polio at the age of four that led to his legs becoming paralyzed, Perlman is described as a violin virtuoso. He attended the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv where he received his initial training. He also studied at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay. In 1958, he made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, which gained him international notoriety. He received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2003 as Grammy awards in 1977, 1980 and 1981, among others.
Contracting a disease or becoming mobile-challenged is a setback that many do not recover from easily. Even though Perlman contracted polio at the age of four that led to his legs becoming paralyzed, his first concert performance took place when he was only 10. In 1963, he made his Carnegie Hall debut. Thereafter, he won the prestigious Leventritt Prize. This award opened the door to performances with the most esteemed orchestras. His violin repertoire was not limited to the classics. It also included jazz and traditional Jewish music.
