The ISU World Figure Skating Championship is a figure skating event held annually in March. Typically lasting four days, the ISU World Figure Skating Championship awards medals in four figure skating disciplines: ladies' singles, men's singles, pairs skating and ice dancing. As the final skating competition of the season, the ISU World Figure Skating Championship represents the ultimate meeting between the top elite figure skaters of the season. Aside from the Olympic Games, a World title is considered the highest achievement in non-professional, competitive figure skating. Past legendary single skaters such as Michelle Kwan, Yuna Kim, Yuzuru Hanyu, Evgeni Plushenko, and pairs skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir as well as many others were able to create historical moments by breaking world records and personal best records and evolving the sport to a new level. The ISU World Figure Skating Championship schedule is divided up into four consecutive days. Each of the four disciplines—ladies' singles, men's singles, pairs skating and ice dancing— will perform a short technical program and a free skate program. The final standing will be determined from a combined score of the two programs. A medal ceremony for each discipline will be held after the free skate. On the final day, the top skaters of each discipline will return to perform in an exhibition gala where the skating awards of the season will be presented in categories such as best coach, best choreographer, lifetime achievement award, best newcomer, most valuable skater and other categories.
The ISU World Figure Skating Championship is open to eligible skaters from ISU members, including Japan, Russia, China, Canada, the United States and many others. Skaters are required to be an eligible competitive figure skater and not have skated or received pay in any unsanctioned ice show, carnival, professional performance, competition or exhibition.
The World Skating Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the repository of the World Skating Hall of Fame. Notable ISU figure skaters with ISU World Figure Skating titles in the Hall of Fame include Shizuka Arakawa from Japan, Alexei Yagudin from Russia, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo from China, Michelle Kwan from the United States and Barbara Underhill, Paul Martini and Brian Orser from Canada.
A country's skater quota is determined from within each discipline by using the final world championship ranking from the previous season. If the total of the country's final placement is 11 or less, the country may send up to three skaters for that discipline the following year. The remaining countries may either send one or two skaters, depending on team placement. The skater must be able to meet the minimum total element score (TES) during sanctioned ISU events during the season for eligibility.
Since the evolution of the ISU 6.0 to the ISU TES judging system, all personal best, season's best and world record-breaking moments are announced to the audience at live ISU figure skating events when the scores are released after a performance.
