Al Unser Jr. took the final flag at the Indy Grand Prix of Portland for the first time in 1984. Unser Jr. won back-to-back races in Portland in 1994 and 1995. Emerson Fittipaldi can be counted among the group of drivers who has two victories at the Indy Grand Prix of Portland to his credit. Fittipaldi won the tournament the first time in 1989. Gil de Ferran was a back-to-back winner of the Portland Grand Prix in 1999 and 2000. Cristiano da Matta was also a lucky winner of the Portland race, with victories in 2002 and 2005.
Newman/Haas Racing has a considerable lead over the other teams in Portland, with eight combined victories. The team won its first Grand Prix of Portland in 1985 with Mario Andretti behind the wheel. The most recent Indy Car victory for Newman/Haas in Portland was the 2017 victory by Sébastien Bourdais. Team Penske has also experienced success in the race with six victories in Portland.
