Every driver brings their A game to the Indy 500, because a win at this race makes you immortal in the world of IndyCar racing. 2014's Indianapolis 500 will be the 98th running of this famed race.

History

The origins of stock car racing can be traced back to the Daytona Beach, FL area in the 1920s and 1930s. The Sprint Cup is the biggest of the NASCAR circuits, and received its first major sponsorship in 1972. At the time, the series was known as the Grand National Series, and later it was named the Winston Cup Series before settling on Sprint. Eventually the circuit would adopt a championship series at the end of the Sprint Cup season, known as The Chase for the Cup. The Chase now features the top 12 drivers of the regular season all competing in a series of races to decide who wins the championship of that racing season. NASCAR has ballooned in popularity in recent years, and now is considered the second-most popular sport in the United States of America, trailing only the National Football League.

The IndyCar Series is the top tier of American open wheel racing. This type of racing is closely governed and the cars involved are required to meet very detailed specifications that are altered every year, and manufacturers of certain parts of the cars are altered with regularity as well. The series was founded in 1996 and the championship of that inaugural season was shared by Scott Sharp and Buzz Calkins. Driver Sam Hornish Junior put together back-to-back titles on the circuit in 2001 and 2002, and would later add another title to his resume in 2006. Dario Franchitti put together an unprecedented run of four titles in five years, winning in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
