Anderson was born in Dunfermline, Scotland and came from a musical family. His father played in a jazz band and grew up listening to many styles of music. Anderson was greatly influenced by rock and roll musicians such as Elvis Presley. When he was a teenager, Anderson formed his first band. He originally started out playing the electric guitar, but gave up the instrument after deciding that he'd never be as good as legendary guitarists such as Eric Clapton. After giving up the guitar Anderson took up the flute, which would later become a centerpiece of the band Jethro Tull.
