'IAM Background'

'Hailing from the town of Marseilles, the talents of IAM all started their individual endeavors back in the 80s. One of the original members, Philippe Fragione, made his foray into the music world with Lively Crew in 1984. In 1986, he spent some time chilling on the music scene in New York. One of his Lively Crew cohorts started DJing under the guise of Kheops. Kheops also joined the IAM fold along with Shurik'n. The trio at first took the name of B Boys Stance. They eventually added Pascal to their lineup and picked up Divin Kephren and Malek Sultan, a pair of hip-hop dancers. Now with six members, IAM was ready to rap by 1989. IAM set a whole new pace with an original style that mingled Middle Eastern and Egyptian-influenced lyrics with unique French beats. They also drew inspiration from Cheikh Anta Diop, an anthropologist, historian and linguist. They issued their homemade Concept effort as a cassette in 1989. Concept developed a presence in Paris, even with a limited amount of copies that were released. Their initial effort was so impressive that talent scouts got wind of it and by the early summer of 1990, IAM inked a deal with Labelle noir. July 1990 precipitated the opportunity for IAM to open for Madonna at the prestigious and well-known Bercy stadium. The high-profile engagement led to openings for other continental stars like Rita Mitsuouko, Public Enemy and James Brown. They issued their debut De la planete Mars in 1991, which turned out to be a monster success. Their sophomore album, Ombre est Lumiere, yielded Le Mia, which took the French mainstream by storm. By this time, IAM was considered to be one of the pioneering French rap posses. They earned the Best Group of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique in early 1995. That same year, IAM contributed material for the film soundtrack to La Haine. After adhering to an exhaustive tour schedule in support of their sophomore effort, IAM took a haitus. Once they regrouped, they came out with several more albums, with their latest one called IAM (2013). These days, IAM continues to tour, collaborate with other artist like the Wu-Tang Clan and work on fresh material.'
