The Houston Ballet is in many ways the cultural ambassador for the city of Houston. The organization was founded 1969, and although this ballet organization has a shorter history than others, it has managed to grow to the fourth largest in the United States. Past performances have included
Don Quixote
and
Swan Lake
as well as new ballets that are commissioned by some of the most renowned professionals in the industry. The ballet season begins in the September with shows for the fall, winter and spring. Live performances are whimsical as well as inspiring.
Sam Houston was an American frontiersman, soldier and politician. He was one of the main figures fighting for the independence of Texas, and he was successful. So, it can be said that Houston, like Texas, has always had a fierce independent spirit. In many ways, the Houston Ballet reflects the can-do spirit of this city. The organization's mission is to train its dancers in the classical ballet methods while adding its own unique touches to the dance genre. It aims to be a ballet company that attracts the best dancers who want to continue developing their talents and skills. Their practice and performance facilities are state-of-art, thanks to generations donations from the community and philanthropists. The dance company also provides instruction for students and professionals, too.
