Hollywood Bowl is an outdoor amphitheater and flagship venue in Los Angeles, California, that has hosted many musical greats from jazz legend Louis Armstrong to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Situated within the Hollywood Hills, the Bowl's location derives its name from the bowl-like shape the venue is carved into. Behind the bowl, the Hollywood Hills rise triumphantly, and the iconic Hollywood Sign is visible to the northeast. Hollywood Bowl's site was chosen in 1919, but its original concentric-arched bandshells didn't appear until the 1920s. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the second and third bandshells. The venue is devoted to music, rated by
Rolling Stone
in 2018 as one of the 10 best live music venues in America. It is home to the
Los Angeles Philharmonic
/
Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
, boasting an illustrious line of star conductors that includes Fritz Reiner and Leopold Stokowski. Hollywood Bowl is widely considered a major stop on domestic and international music tours, attracting such luminaries as

The Hollywood Bowl seats roughly 17,500 people. The seating array is that of a classic amphitheater, albeit with a more elliptical, or elongated, shape. The seating row heights rise gradually toward the back as in an indoor theater. The overall shape of the seating area bulges laterally at mid-orchestra, tapering slightly toward the back of the bowl and sharply at front where the front orchestra seat section abuts the proscenium. Every section benefits from the acoustical boost of electronic amplification and a clear view of the stage.
