The Hockey East Association is the premier college ice hockey conference of the New England states. It is currently comprised of 11 Division I teams from across the northeast: the
Massachusetts Minutemen
, the
Boston College Eagles
, the
Providence Friars
, the
UMass Lowell River Hawks
, the
Northeastern Huskies
, the
Boston University Terriers
, the
UConn Huskies
, the
New Hampshire Wildcats
, the
Maine Black Bears
, the
Merrimack Warriors
and the
Vermont Catamounts
. Since its founding in 1984, the conference has played an annual tournament between the end of the regular season and the beginning of the NCAA Tournament. The inaugural event was held at the Providence Civic Center for the 1984 to 1985 season. However, within a few years, the tournament had relocated to a larger arena in Boston. The first event at the newly built FleetCenter (later renamed to TD Banknorth Garden and the TD Garden) was held in 1996. If you want to witness a weekend of great conference hockey, then you should purchase Hockey East semifinals tickets at StubHub, a leading source for live events.
The Hockey East Association Tournament involves 8 of the 11 teams. The remaining three teams do not qualify for the tournament. Teams are seeded based on their regular-season conference record. In the first round, the top four teams host the last four seeds on their home campus. Each matchup involves a best-of-three series, meaning that the first team to win two games advances. The four winners from the first round will be reseeded again for a semifinal and championship game at a neutral site location. Both the semifinals and championship games are single-elimination.
The 2020 Hockey East Tournament Semifinals matchup takes place on March 20th, followed by a championship game on the next day. A single ticket will give you access to both semifinals games.
The 2019 Hockey East Semifinals games took place on March 22. No. 3 seed Northeastern beat No. 5 seed Boston University by a score of 2-1, while No. 7 seed Boston College upset overall No. 1 seed Massachusetts by a score of 3-0. Northeastern went on to beat Boston College 3-2 in the championship finals held the next day. Brandon Hawkins scored two goals and had an assist in the victory.
TD Garden
, which is also the home of the
Boston Celtics
and the
Boston Bruins
, has a seating capacity of approximately 17,565 for hockey games, including 1,100 club seats and 90 executive suites. Attendees can enjoy all of the amenities and features that the arena has to offer, including three private restaurants and 47 concession stands. The arena also features a high-definition scoreboard with 360-degree LED technology.
The winner of the Hockey East Tournament receives the Lamoriello Trophy, which is named in honor of Lou Lamoriello, the founder and first commissioner of the conference. In the weeks leading up to the start of the tournament, the trophy will visit each of the 11 campuses for a special tour. The winner of the tournament also receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, regardless of the team’s overall record. This gives teams an incentive to compete for the championship. However, even teams that don't win the conference tournament can still earn an at-large bid based on their play during the season. Conference tournament games do count toward the team's chances.
If you are traveling to Boston for the semifinals, then you might want to stay and check out the
championship game
at the same venue. The championship game always follows the semifinals the next day.
