The Outrigger Volleyball Tournament is one of the main attractions for the early season collegiate volleyball tournaments nationwide. Three outstanding players were on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team: Colton Cowell, Rado Parapunov and Joe Worsley. Mike Walton won AVCA Coach of the Year awards in 1995 and 2002; Josh Walker won AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2019, the same year the Hawaii Warriors captured their first Big West Conference title in 2019. Charlie Wade has been instrumental in making the Hawaii Warriors national championship contenders. The Hawaii Warriors were the runner-up at the NCAA Championship game in 2019 at Long Beach State. This honor earned coach Charlie Wade the AVCA National Coach of the Year award. Wade has been at the helm of the Hawaii Warriors for ten years. The Stan Sheriff Center, named after the University of Hawaii athletics director Stan Sheriff, hosted the first men’s volleyball match on January 25, 1995, against the Loyola Marymount. The arena was opened in 1994, and it is home to the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The Stan Sheriff Center was the home of the 2004 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship.
