Gustavo Dudamel is a musician and conductor who came from humble beginnings. Born in Venezuela, he began studying with the National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Venezuela at the age of five. His aptitude for conducting orchestras was noticed early, and by the time he was 18, he was appointed to conduct the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. His work with this orchestra, along with his seemingly limitless ability to dedicate himself to side projects, is what led the LA Philharmonic to sign him as music director in 2009. He still serves as music director today. However, Dudamel's appeal extends beyond the realm of classical music. He made history by being the first classical musician to participate in the Super Bowl half-time show. While he has achieved acclaim in mainstream arenas, Gustavo Dudamel also remains one of the most decorated classical musicians of all time: he has won a Grammy, been voted to the Gramophone Hall of Fame, and has appeared on several high-profile late-night shows.

The Savior of Classical Music?

Gustavo Dudamel was hailed by some as the savior of classical music after his first performance with the LA Philharmonic. While this distinction is up for debate, countless reviewers have described his conducting style as almost otherworldly--many describe him as someone who seems, in a sense, to become completely one with the music he's conducting and helping to create]. And as Dudamel nears two decades with the LA Philharmonic, he shows no signs of slowing down. Some of his more recent outreach efforts and achievements include a six-part Sirius XM series called On the Podium with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and being awarded the Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award in 2016.[4] Dudamel hasn't forgotten his beginnings with youth orchestras, either--he continues to work to bring music to children and has been awarded Harvard University's Q Prize, which seeks to recognize extraordinary service to children.
