'We're an American Band'

Grand Funk Railroad was formed in Flint, Mich. in 1969, taking its name from a play on words on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which ran through the city. A performance at the legendary Atlanta Pop Festival (which featured everyone from Led Zeppelin to Janis Joplin to Santana) landed them a contract with Capitol Records and prompted the release of On Time, which achieved gold status and rose to No. 27 on the Billboard 200. The band's follow-up album, Grand Funk, hit No. 11 on the chart. The band's next seven albums followed within in just five years, and incredibly, each ranked within Billboard's top 10 albums. Most notable was 1973's We're an American Band, which rose to the No. 2 position on the Billboard 200 chart. After some shifts to the original lineup, the band is today comprised of Max Carl (vocals, guitar), Bruce Kulick (guitar), Don Brewer (drums), Mel Schacher (bass), and Tim Cashion (keyboards). Grand Funk Railroad's most recent studio album, What's Funk?, camein 1983. The band has since released several live and compilation albums, and continues to uphold its reputation as a formative act in the hard rock genre, as well as maintaining a regular touring cycle throughout the US, logging approximately 40 shows per year.
