Gordon Lightfoot was born in 1938 in the Canadian province of Ontario and demonstrated his musical talent early in life. He began to study voice while in elementary school and gave his first public performance just before he turned 13. While in high school, he studied folk guitar and was especially influenced by the work of lyricist Stephen Foster. His lifelong love of music led him to pursue a formal degree at the University of Toronto, where he began to expand his interests beyond folk music. He delved into barbershop quartets and started to build a local reputation by performing in coffeehouses in the Ontario area. In 1965, Gordon Lightfoot made his album debut with
