Gong Background

Gong was first formed in 1967, when Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth started the band in France. Over the years, the band has had a number of different members and has undergone several changes, but they have continued to produce great prog-rock, that has delighted fans for decades. The group released their first album in 1970 and began attracting attention from critics and fans during the early '70s. In 1971, the group played at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, in Somerset, England. The performance saw the band gain a host of new fans in the United Kingdom and following that show, they embarked on a country wide tour of the UK.

Gong remained a popular band throughout much of the '70s, but in 1976, the band took an extended hiatus and didn't take the stage again until 1994. In '94, the group once again took the stage and played a 25th anniversary concert, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band. Following that performance, the group played a worldwide tour, and decided to continue playing music together. There have been a few fractures in the group, with ex members forming their own version of the group. Throughout the late '90s and early 2000s, Gong played several shows together, but often spent time working on other musical projects. Over the course of their career, Gong has released 33 albums in the groups several different lineups. The band's first album came out in 1970 and was titled, Magick Brother. The album received mixed reviews from critics and didn't feature any big breakthrough hits for the band. Gong got their first big break with the release of their second album, Camembert Electrique. The album came out in 1971 and was given four and a half stars by Allmusic. The album featured the songs, You Can't Kill Me, And You Tried So Hard and Tropical Fish.

Throughout the '70s, the band released a series of well received albums and many of their records received great reviews from critics. This contributed to the band's rise in popularity and saw their fan base grow. Gong's most recent album was released in 2014 and is title, I See You. It was the first album in five years by the band.
